Would You Drink This Icelandic Craft Beer Made From A Giant Whale Testicle?
by Tommy Gimler
Just how thirsty are you?
That’s the question you’ll have to ask yourself if you plan on visiting Iceland’s Stedji Brewery sometime in the near future. Located in the town of Borgarfjordur, the crew at Stedji Brewery is now making a medieval beer called Havalur. What makes Havalur so different from the rest of the pints you’ll enjoy elsewhere on this planet? Yup, you guessed it – it’s made “with whale testicle that’s been smoked in sheep’s dung.”
The giant whale nugget weighs in somewhere between 15 to 18 pounds, and they use “one testicle in each batch and joke that it is the size of a basketball for a troll.”
Thankfully, Katie Lockhart at Travel + Leisure magazine recently made the trek to the Stedji tasting room so we wouldn’t have to, and she worked up enough courage to take a sip of the whale-ball beer.
“I was nervous and hesitant to try it, but it was exactly how they said it would taste: like a porter with hints of caramel and a smoky, almost meaty aftertaste,” Lockhart wrote. “I washed it down with a homemade hotdog, made sans whale testicle.”
Only time will tell whether or not Havalur eventually makes its way into an American pub, but you have to think that despite the fact that it’s made from whale nuts, it still has to taste better than a bottle of Mickey’s.
